Advanced Land Navigation Course
This course focuses on developing and refining your land navigation skills, ensuring you can successfully navigate challenging terrain while maintaining operational security. Participants will learn to utilize primary navigation tools such as a lensatic compass, protractor, and topographic map, as well as secondary tools like GPS for validation and emergencies. The course includes essential equipment like pace count beads, night vision devices, and communication gear, ensuring you're prepared for both day and night navigation.
Through detailed map reconnaissance, you'll plan primary and alternate routes using terrain association, handrails, and checkpoints. Day navigation emphasizes tactical movement and location confirmation using attack points and backstops, while night navigation techniques focus on pace count, azimuth control, and identifying terrain features specific to low visibility. The course also includes tactical movement techniques to avoid detection, such as stealth navigation and bounding overwatch in high-risk areas. After completing the exercise, an After Action Review (AAR) will provide valuable insights to improve future navigation efforts.
Dates:
April 14-17 2025
End State::
Successfully navigate to all designated points within the allotted time, demonstrating proficiency in terrain association, route planning, and tactical movement while maintaining situational awareness and operational security.
EQUIPMENT:
Primary Navigation Equipment, Lensatic compass, protractor, topographic map. Secondary Navigation Equipment: GPS device (for validation and emergency use only).
- Support Equipment:
- pace count beads.
- Night vision devices
- Communication gear
- MGRS Coordinate Sheet.
- Waterproof map case.
- Red light source (for night map reading).
- Execution:
Map Reconnaissance and Route Planning:
- Conduct a detailed map study to identify key terrain features, elevation changes, potential obstacles, and danger areas.
- Develop primary and alternate routes using terrain association, handrails, and checkpoints.
Lost Navigation:
- Ensure all team members understand resection and intersection
techniques to re-establish position if lost.
Day Navigation:
- Execute the planned route, maintaining tactical movement. Utilize terrain association and dead reckoning techniques. Confirm location periodically using attack points, catching features, and backstops.
Night Navigation:
- Adjust navigation techniques for limited visibility. Emphasize the use of pace count and azimuth control. Identify and utilize night-specific terrain features such as water sources, tree lines, and man-made objects as checkpoints.
MOVEMENT TECHNIQUES:
- Tactical Movement: Navigate using stealth to avoid detection. Conduct short, controlled halts to check bearings and adjust routes as necessary.
- Bounding Overwatch: Utilize bounding overwatch in high-risk areas to ensure security while moving.
AFTER ACTION REVIEW (AAR):
Conduct a detailed AAR immediately following the exercise. Discuss key points such as terrain analysis, route selection, use of navigation tools, and overall mission execution. Identify what went well and what can be improved for future operations.
