Cold Weather Training Course

This Cold Weather Training course is designed to equip participants with the skills needed to operate effectively in environments below 32°F. The training focuses on combat survival, winter movement, and field craft in cold weather, with specific emphasis on gear familiarization, tactical considerations, and route planning. Participants will also learn essential survival techniques, including shelter building, cold weather nutrition, and injury prevention and treatment, ensuring they are fully prepared for the harsh conditions of cold environments.

The course includes a combination of classroom instruction and practical exercises (PE), covering topics such as gear selection, bivouac setup, avalanche safety, and winter route planning. Over the five-day course, participants will engage in missions involving movement through cold terrain, skill stations on water procurement and communication, and scenarios simulating real-world challenges such as reacting to contact and avalanche rescue. By the end of the course, participants will have developed the knowledge and confidence needed to survive and operate in extreme cold weather conditions.

General Overview: This course is designed to prepare operational elements to function effectively in the basic tenets of: Combat Survival, Winter Movement, and Field Craft in Cold Weather (<32f) Environments.

Specific Areas of emphasis include Survival techniques and Gear Familiarization in Cold Weather environments, Tactical Considerations in Cold Weather, Movement Techniques and Route Planning in Cold Weather Environments, and General Field Craft associated with Cold Weather Environments.

Classes:

  • Gear Consideration and Selection 1.5 hrs. Class/Demo (Stoves, Tents, Sleds, Snowshoes/Skis, Clothing/PCU/Footwear, Packs, Water, Food, Avy gear (Beacon, Shovel, Probe)
  • Bivouac Considerations 1.5 hours Class Overnight PE (Campsite selection, procedures, tricks of the trade, Shelter methods (improvised, hasty, prefab, etc.), Water and Food Procurement/Preparation)
  • Medical Considerations 1.5-hour Class/PE (Cold weather injuries/prevention/treatment, packaging/movement)
  • Cold Weather Nutrition 45 min Class
  • Avalanche Considerations and Safety 2-hour Class + PE (Avalanche Characteristics, Risk Mitigation, Rescue Techniques)
  • Winter Route Planning 45 min Class + PE
  • Winter Tactics 45 min Class + PE (Day 4)

  Proposed Schedule:

  • Day 1: Infill, Reception, Orientation, Gear Class/Demo, Bivouac Class/Overnight PE,
  • Day 2: Medical Class/PE, Nutrition Class, Avalanche Class and PE, Winter Route Planning Class/PE (Prep for mission/movement next day)
  • Day 3: Mission Brief, Movement (5km), Skill Stations: Water procurement, Comms, Linkup, Bivouac (Planned/Prefab)
  • Day 4: Movement (5km), Skill Stations: React to Contact, Evasion, Linkup, Bivouac (Hasty)
  • Day 5: Movement (3km) Avy Rescue/Med Movement Scenario (1km), RTB, AAR/lunch, Exfil
