Modern Conflict Small Unit Tactics (SUT)
This course is designed to train personnel in modern tactics, techniques, and procedures (TTPs) for operations in heavily wooded environments, drawing valuable lessons from the Ukrainian battlefield. Participants will begin with terrain analysis, learning how to identify natural cover such as dense foliage, fallen trees, and uneven terrain to improve survivability and reduce enemy visibility. The course emphasizes the use of Ukrainian terrain maps to demonstrate common forested landscapes, highlighting critical features such as elevation changes, natural barriers, and potential choke points that influence movement and engagement.
Movement techniques play a critical role in this training, with a focus on stealth and noise discipline. Soldiers will practice moving quietly through the woods, using natural sounds to mask their movements and focusing on foot placement to avoid detection. Bounding overwatch techniques, as used by Ukrainian forces, will be taught to maintain unit security and provide support fire while advancing through dense forests. The course also covers enemy contact drills, including ambush and counter-ambush tactics, using real-world examples from Ukrainian operations. Soldiers will also learn escape and evasion techniques, incorporating deceptive trail-making and the effective use of terrain for cover to avoid enemy capture.
In addition to tactical operations, the course emphasizes field craft and survival skills, such as constructing shelters using natural materials and mastering camouflage techniques. Ukrainian methods for building temporary shelters and blending into wooded environments will be demonstrated. Communication is key in these settings, so the course covers radio procedures in challenging environments and the use of signaling devices, such as flares and markers, drawing on Ukrainian field practices.
Objective: To train personnel in effective (TTPs) for operations in heavily wooded environments, drawing lessons from Ukrainian operational experience.
- Terrain Analysis
· Identify Cover and Concealment: Emphasize the importance of using natural cover such as dense foliage, fallen trees, and uneven terrain to reduce enemy visibility and improve unit survivability.
· Understanding Terrain Features: Incorporate Ukrainian terrain maps and overlays to demonstrate typical forested terrain encountered in Ukraine. Highlight key terrain features such as elevation changes, natural barriers, and potential choke points.
2. Movement Techniques
· Stealth and Noise Discipline:** Train units on noise discipline and stealth techniques used by Ukrainian forces in forested areas to avoid detection. Focus on moving quietly, using natural sounds to mask movement, and proper foot placement.
· Bounding Overwatch: Employ bounding overwatch techniques for movement through dense woods. Highlight how Ukrainian units use bounding overwatch to maintain security and support fire.
3. Enemy Contact Drills
· Ambush and Counter-Ambush: Conduct drills on ambush and counter-ambush tactics. Use case studies of Ukrainian ambushes and counter-ambush responses to illustrate effective engagement strategies in wooded terrain.
· Escape and Evasion: Teach techniques for escaping and evading enemy contact, incorporating lessons from Ukrainian experiences. Focus on creating deceptive trails and utilizing terrain for cover.
4. Patrol Operations
· Patrol Formation: Train in standard patrol formations adapted for dense wooded environments, emphasizing dispersion and security. Review Ukrainian patrol tactics and their adaptations for woodland operations.
· Combat Identification: Practice combat identification drills in low-visibility
conditions, reflecting the challenges faced by Ukrainian forces in detecting and engaging targets in dense forests.
5. Field Craft and Survival Skills
- Shelter Construction: Instruct on constructing field shelters using natural materials. Highlight techniques used by Ukrainian forces for building temporary shelters in woodland areas.
- Camouflage Techniques: Teach advanced camouflage techniques for both personnel and equipment. Use Ukrainian methods and adaptations for blending into wooded environments.
6. Coordination and Communication
- Radio Procedures: Reinforce proper radio communication procedures in dense wooded environments, including dealing with signal degradation and ensuring clear, concise communication.
- Use of Signaling Devices: Train on the use of signaling devices such as flares and markers, integrating lessons from Ukrainian field practices.
