Meet Tyler Dean Milligan
Instructor at The Survival University
Tyler Dean Milligan brings grit, curiosity, and relentless drive to every part of life. A 10-year Army Infantry veteran (100% disabled) turned wilderness instructor, he’s battled through adversity, transformed his body, and become one of the voices pushing men to regain strength, character, and agency.
Before he ever joined TSU, Tyler stepped into the public eye when he appeared on Discovery Channel’s The Garden: Commune or Cult. As a prospective member, he approached the off-grid group with a direct, questioning mindset, pressing on controversial issues like community governance, hidden tensions, and even the infamous “cat-eating” allegations. He wasn’t in there to gloss things over; he was there to ask hard questions and see what truth he could uncover. That courage to jump into unknown territory says a lot about who he is.
Tyler’s story is one of transformation. At one point, he was heavier, stuck in destructive habits. Instead of accepting that, he rewrote his life. Through discipline, consistency, fitness, and a strict carnivore diet, he forged a version of himself that won’t settle. He understands struggle deeply and believes in the power of growing through it.
He and his wife, Heather, live off-grid in a tiny home they built, embracing simplicity and total autonomy. But don’t let the quiet fool you, they bring their energy everywhere. Together they perform acrobatics under the big top, touring with a circus team and blending artistry with physical discipline.
Behind the scenes at TSU, Tyler runs the social media machine. His analytical, data-driven brain tracks how videos rank, what topics gain traction, how to best present survival content so it reaches those who need it. He’s part wildman, part strategist, with a healthy dose of humor.
Tyler is also a published fiction author. His debut novel, State of Contempt: Ruination, has been praised for its dark apocalyptic atmosphere and philosophical depth. Blue Ink Reviews called it “satisfying.” The story follows Duke Hollander, a prisoner at Fort Leavenworth fighting for redemption, survival, and reunion with his family after an explosion plunges the prison into chaos. It’s a tale of resilience, struggle, and the fight to overcome one’s past, echoing the themes Tyler lives by.
Whether he’s teaching in the field, flipping people through the air, or writing stories of survival, Tyler pushes people to be better, stronger, and more capable than they ever thought possible.
Testimonials
Truly fascinating -- as well as educational -- experience. Jason & Tyler were both warm, wonderful humans. Their instructional style was top-notch, neither too fast nor too slow, and they always made sure questions were fully answered. And they most definitely did not oversell their experience; we learned such a great variety of skills in just a few days. An absolutely enjoyable experience, and one that will lead me to take more of SU's classes in the future. Highest recommendation
We did the one day winter survival course and it was so educational! The team Tyler, Jason, and Hutch were phenomenal. All incredibly insightful and able to tailor the information to all levels. Stryker their dog also stole the show with the most adorable cuddles. Would definitely recommend their training!
