Off Grid Communications is a one day practical course focused on legal, reliable communication when cellular networks and internet access are unavailable. Students learn how common radio services are actually used during outages, along with realistic range, limitations, and planning considerations. The course balances clear instruction with hands on operation so participants leave confident using their equipment. No prior radio experience is required. A Motorola FRS radio is included with tuition.
When cellular networks and internet access fail, communication is usually the first capability to disappear.
This one day practical course teaches civilians, preparedness minded individuals, and small teams how to communicate legally and reliably when modern infrastructure is unavailable. The focus is not on theory, gear hype, or fringe practices. It is about what actually works, what is legal, and how people communicate under real world constraints.
Students are introduced to common radio services used during outages, including FRS, GMRS, and Amateur Radio, along with an introduction to off grid mesh communications. The course balances straightforward classroom instruction with hands on operation so students leave with real confidence using their equipment.
No prior radio experience is required.
Throughout the day, students learn how to select appropriate communication tools, understand realistic range and limitations, avoid common mistakes, and build a simple communications plan for family, community, or team use. Emphasis is placed on message discipline, redundancy, and decision making when stress and uncertainty are present.
This course also covers the legal realities of radio use, including FCC rules, licensing requirements, power limits, and what is actually allowed during emergencies. Myths and misinformation are addressed directly so students understand how to stay compliant while remaining effective.
A basic introduction to antennas and power management is included, focusing on practical setups that work in urban and suburban environments.
Each student receives a Motorola FRS radio and participates in hands on configuration, operation, and troubleshooting during the course. Students may also bring personal radios if they choose.
This course is designed for people who want communication capability without military role play, illegal activity, or unnecessary complexity. It is practical, grounded, and focused on competence.
