OUTDOOR LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT • COLORADO
When the plan changes.
How will you lead?
For executives, managers, and emerging leaders ready to put leadership into practice.
Step outside familiar routines and into decisions that ask more of you. Practice setting priorities, communicating clearly, and guiding others when the next step isn’t obvious.
Discuss your leadership goals ↗Think clearly. Lead deliberately. Learn from experience.

PRACTICE THE DECISIONS BEHIND LEADERSHIP
Build the judgment.
Find your leadership voice.
An unfamiliar challenge can reveal familiar habits. Do you decide too quickly? Wait for certainty? Take everything on yourself? This program creates opportunities to notice those patterns, practice a different response, and receive useful feedback.
Set the priorities.
Separate the urgent from the essential. Weigh tradeoffs, recognize assumptions, and make a reasoned decision with incomplete information.
Lead through others.
Explain the goal, delegate responsibility, and check for understanding. Learn when to step forward and when to make room for another person’s expertise.
Adapt your approach.
Notice your response to pressure. Listen to feedback, reconsider a decision, and change course without losing clarity or purpose.

WHY TAKE LEADERSHIP OUTSIDE?
New conditions.
New perspective.
Real practice.
The outdoors changes the setting and interrupts the usual routines. Familiar job titles offer less direction when the problem is new, resources are limited, or people see different ways forward.
Facilitated field challenges give you a chance to practice how you lead, see the effect of your decisions, and try again. The adventure creates the experience. Reflection turns it into learning.
Activities are introduced during the program. Format and physical demands are discussed in advance, so participants can prepare without knowing every challenge.
THE LEADERSHIP QUESTIONS
What did you notice?
What did you decide?
What will you change?
- Priorities. What guided your first decision?
- People. Whose input did you seek?
- Responsibility. What did you delegate, and why?
- Adaptation. What changed your thinking?
EXPERIENCE. FEEDBACK. ANOTHER CHANCE TO LEAD.
A CLEAR LEARNING PROCESS
Learn. Lead.
Reflect. Apply.
Each stage builds on the last. Preparation supports the challenge, feedback sharpens your approach, and a practical next step connects the experience to your role.
Learn.
Build a shared foundation, learn the relevant field skills, and clarify the leadership behaviors you want to practice.
Lead.
Take responsibility during unfamiliar challenges. Set direction, allocate resources, and guide others as conditions evolve.
Reflect.
Review your reasoning and its effect. Hear other perspectives, examine assumptions, and identify a different approach to try.
Apply.
Put the learning into another field experience, then choose a specific leadership practice to carry back to work.

PRESENCE IS PART OF LEADERSHIP
Stay grounded.
Listen closely.
Lead deliberately.
Pressure can narrow your attention. A deliberate pause gives you room to notice what is happening, consider another perspective, and choose how to respond.
Leadership includes knowing when to speak, when to listen, and when someone else should lead. Guided reflection helps you recognize those moments and understand the effect you have on others.
