Leave with experience.
Cool mountain air. Pine needles underfoot. A handful of tinder that looks promising until you try to light it. Out here, the details become part of the lesson.
You work through a skill, see what happens, and try again with an instructor beside you. A better fire lay. A more useful shelter site. A clearer understanding of what to do first when a plan changes.
Perhaps you want to feel more prepared on a hike, share something meaningful with your family, or finally practice the skills you have only read about. Private wilderness survival training gives that reason room to shape the day.

Learn the technique.
Practice the judgment.
A fire-starting method is useful. Knowing when to stop, change your materials, or focus on shelter first makes it more useful. Core instruction connects practical skills with awareness, priorities, and adaptable decisions.
Read the situation
Think through immediate needs, your surroundings, and available resources. Practice deciding what deserves your energy first.
Build a working fire
Explore fire preparation, tinder and fuel selection, and fire-starting methods. Learn how conditions influence your approach.
Work with your environment
Consider site selection, protection from weather, and emergency shelter construction using appropriate equipment and materials.
Plan for a basic need
Discuss finding water and practice appropriate treatment methods, including filtration and purification within the planned curriculum.
Understand food priorities
Explore food as a survival need, its place among immediate priorities, and practical considerations for using available resources. The specific food skills covered are confirmed within the core program.
Know your equipment
Explore useful kit choices, safe tool use, and practical problem-solving. Understand how your gear supports the skills you practice.
Your final training plan depends on the available curriculum, instructor team, equipment, conditions, schedule, and safety requirements. We’ll confirm the scope with you before you book.

A training day with your goals in mind.
A couple preparing for more time outdoors may have different questions than a family sharing its first survival skills experience. A group of friends may want extra practice with fire, water, or shelter.
Tell us about your experience and what you hope to learn. We can adjust the pace and emphasis within our established core program and discuss possible dates and training duration. Navigation, rappelling, medical instruction, adventure trips, and substantial customization are separately priced.
This program is for individuals, couples, families, and personal groups of friends. For children, mixed experience levels, or specific access needs, talk with us about suitability before booking.

The mountains are part of the lesson.
Our private mountain training grounds near Cripple Creek, Colorado, bring the terrain, forests, and changing outdoor conditions into the learning process.
Instead of only discussing a shelter or a fire in a classroom, you can consider the ground beneath you, the materials around you, and the weather overhead. Those observations become decisions you can practice.
Visits are by arrangement. We’ll confirm your meeting location, preparation, and training logistics before arrival. Meals, overnight accommodations, transportation, and guided trips are not automatically included.
Instruction grounded in doing.
Founder Jason Marsteiner grew up in Colorado near Cripple Creek and began teaching survival skills in 2010. The Survival University brings together instructors with a range of outdoor specialties and a practical approach to learning.
Private training creates time to ask why a method works, notice where an attempt falls short, and make a useful adjustment. The goal is to develop both skills and the confidence to keep thinking when circumstances change.
Start with your reason.
Share who is coming, what you want to practice, and your preferred timeframe.
Agree on a realistic plan.
We’ll discuss suitability, scope, instructor availability, pricing, and any additional arrangements.
Arrive ready to learn.
Once the details are confirmed, prepare for the agreed activities and mountain conditions. Then bring your questions into the field.

A few good questions.
Do I need survival experience?
Tell us where you are starting. Private instruction allows us to discuss a suitable pace and emphasis for your experience level. We’ll confirm whether the planned training is a good fit.
Can I book one-on-one instruction?
Yes. Solo core training is $600 per day from September 1 through April 30 and $800 per day from May 1 through August 31. There is no two-person minimum. Three days of solo core training cost $1,800 off-season or $2,400 in busy season.
Can our family train together?
Family inquiries are welcome. Include the number of participants, children’s ages where relevant, experience levels, and goals so we can discuss suitability and a practical plan.
How much can we customize?
The base rate includes modest adjustments to pace and emphasis within food, fire, shelter, water, and survival priorities. Navigation, rappelling, medical training, adventure trips, specialty activities, and substantial curriculum changes are outside the base program and cost extra. All additional arrangements must be agreed in advance and depend on availability, suitability, staffing, and safety requirements.
Are meals or overnight accommodations included?
Meals and overnight accommodations are not included in the standard instruction rate. Food-related survival skills are instruction, not a meal service. Ask about any meal, lodging, or other logistical needs when you inquire. Arrangements and costs must be confirmed separately.
What should we bring?
Preparation depends on your agreed training plan, time of year, and conditions. We’ll confirm the relevant equipment and arrival details before your visit. Plan for an outdoor mountain environment at approximately 9,500 feet.
Do these rates apply to companies, military units, or other organizations?
No. This page and its rates are for personal training with individuals, couples, families, and friends. Companies and executive retreats should explore our corporate and team building programs. Military units, agencies, schools, and other organizations should request an organizational quote. Personal and family rates do not apply to organizational bookings, even when the participant count matches the chart.
Would a scheduled group course be a better fit?
If you prefer an established course format, explore our scheduled courses. Private instruction starts with a conversation about your own group and training goals.
Plan training for yourself, your family, or your friends.
Tell us who you would like to share the experience with, or what you want to learn one-on-one. The listed rates cover our core survival program with modest adjustments to pace and emphasis. This form is for personal training. Corporate, military, agency, school, and other organizational inquiries should request a separate quote here.
