Wilderness Medicine Skills You’ll Practice

Patient assessment, injury care, environmental emergencies, and practical scenarios for everyday outdoor adventures.

A medical problem on the trail can leave you caring for someone while help is still hours away. This Wilderness First Aid course in Colorado builds a practical foundation for hikers, backpackers, hunters, families, and outdoor leaders. Off Grid Medic teaches the two day, 18 hour program at The Survival University’s Mountain Camp near Cripple Creek, within reach of Colorado Springs.

Patient Assessment and Medical Decisions

Practice a repeatable approach to assessing an injured or ill person, gathering useful information, and identifying priorities. Learn basic anatomy and physiology, recognize changes in a patient’s condition, and communicate what you find while planning your next steps.

Wounds, Bleeding, and Injury Care

Work through bleeding control, wound care, shock, and musculoskeletal injuries such as sprains and fractures. The curriculum also addresses head, neck, and spinal injuries, burns, bites, and stings. Guided practice connects the material to decisions you may face with limited supplies outdoors.

Environmental Emergencies and Evacuation

Study emergencies involving heat, cold, altitude, and exposure. Practice improvised evacuation techniques and litter carries, and learn how to organize a functional wilderness medical kit. Day and night practical exercises help connect assessment, teamwork, and patient care.

WFA Certification and the CPR Upgrade

WFA certification is valid for two years. Choose the $295 course without the optional CPR certification, or the $350 option with CPR and AED certification, a $55 upgrade. The optional certification covers adult, child, and infant CPR, AED use, and choking response. Select your option when booking and allow time after the WFA course for the additional certification session.

WHO THIS TRAINING IS FOR

Who Should Take Wilderness First Aid?

Everyone shows up for different reasons.

WFA is a practical starting point for people who spend time outdoors and want to respond more effectively when someone is hurt or becomes ill. Hikers, backpackers, hunters, anglers, parents, scout leaders, and outdoor recreation groups can use these skills on trips where professional medical care is delayed.

No previous medical training is required. You will participate in outdoor scenarios, practice working with other students, and apply the material in realistic situations. A reasonable level of fitness is expected, and you should bring clothing and equipment for a full weekend in the mountains.

Want More Training? Explore Wilderness First Responder

WFA gives you a foundation over two days. If you want a full week of wilderness medicine, more patient care scenarios, and additional practice with medical leadership and evacuation decisions, explore our Wilderness First Responder course in Colorado. The WFR session runs June 21–27, 2027 and costs $850. You do not need to complete WFA before taking WFR.

Plan for the Full Weekend

Check in at 7:00 AM on June 19. Instruction is scheduled from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM Mountain Time, with day and night practical exercises included in the program. Plan to attend both June 19 and June 20, and allow additional time after the WFA course if you choose the CPR certification upgrade.

For people who want real skills, not just talk about them.
