2027 Wilderness First Responder Session
Wilderness Medicine Skills You’ll Practice
Medical instruction, guided practice, and day and night patient care scenarios in Colorado’s mountain environment.
A medical problem changes when help is hours away. This Wilderness First Responder course in Colorado gives you seven days to practice assessing patients, organizing care, and making evacuation decisions with limited equipment. Off Grid Medic teaches the program at The Survival University’s Mountain Camp near Cripple Creek, within reach of Colorado Springs.
Patient Assessment and Ongoing Care
Build a repeatable approach to evaluating an injured or ill person. The curriculum covers anatomy, vital signs, patient assessment, and medical leadership. Scenarios give you practice gathering information, identifying priorities, and communicating with your team as a situation develops.
Trauma and Environmental Emergencies
Practice bleeding control, wound care, splinting, and approaches to head and spinal injuries. Study the challenges posed by heat, cold, altitude, lightning, drowning, bites, and stings. The goal is to connect medical knowledge with decisions you may face on a trail, at camp, or during an expedition.
Rescue, Evacuation, and Teamwork
Work through emergency carries, improvised litters, evacuation planning, and incident command concepts. The curriculum includes an introduction to rotary aircraft ground operations. Day and night practical exercises help you combine patient care, communication, and teamwork in an outdoor setting.
CPR, AED, and Certification
Adult, child, and infant CPR and AED use are included. WFR certification is valid for two years. If an employer or organization requires a particular credential, confirm its acceptance requirements before registering.
WHO THIS TRAINING IS FOR
Who Should Take Wilderness First Responder?
Everyone shows up for different reasons.
WFR is a strong fit for people responsible for others outdoors:
- Wilderness guides, outdoor educators, and instructors
- Search and rescue team members and expedition leaders
- Adventure race staff and people supporting remote events
- Backpackers and outdoor travelers seeking more time to practice patient care
The program is designed for people who are not medical professionals as well as outdoor personnel expanding their training. It involves physical activity, outdoor exercises, and a full week of participation. A reasonable level of fitness is expected.
WFR or Wilderness First Aid?
Choose WFR when you want a full week devoted to remote patient care, leadership, and repeated scenarios. Our Wilderness First Aid course is a shorter, two day option for building a foundation. If you need training for work, ask your employer which certification it requires.
Plan for a Full Training Week
Check in at 7:00 AM on June 21. Daily instruction is scheduled from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM Mountain Time, and day and night practical exercises are part of the program. Plan to attend the complete June 21–27 session and allow time for the evening exercises.
For people who want real skills, not just talk about them.
